Submission to the Review of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992

ALGA has made a submission to the Commonwealth’s Review of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), strongly supporting reforms to modernise the legislation, strengthen protections for people with disability, and implement recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission. The submission endorses the introduction of a positive duty to eliminate discrimination, a modernised definition of disability reflecting social and human rights models, and clearer guidance on reasonable adjustments and unjustifiable hardship.

ALGA’s recommendations call for tailored, practical guidance for councils on new obligations, sustainable resourcing to support equitable implementation across large and small councils, and alignment with state and territory frameworks to avoid duplication. ALGA emphasised that while councils are well placed to build more inclusive communities, this can only be achieved through clear national coordination and ongoing collaboration with the sector.
