Local Government

There are 537 councils Australia-wide, which employ more than 200,000 people across about 40 occupations.

Around 55 per cent of local governments are located in regional, rural, or remote areas, about 25 per cent in urban and urban fringe and 20 per cent in urban areas.

Local government roads make up around 75 per cent of the national road network (by length) and councils manage more than $600 billion in public assets.
