Proactive flood emergency planning ‘more essential than ever’

The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience is hosting
a webinar to showcase its newly updated Flood Planning for Disaster Resilience
Handbook.

Leading experts, including Floodplain Management Australia president Ian Dinham, will unpack the principles and practice of emergency planning during the special event.

The AIDR says the significant risk posed to Australian
communities by flooding means it is essential that proactive emergency plans
are developed to guide responses.

“Average annual economic losses for floods have been
estimated to be greater than cyclones, storms, bushfires and earthquakes,
costing Australia $8.8 billion annually.

“Without plans, authorities are forced to be reactive in
their decision-making and can be left to deal with avoidable consequences.”

The new handbook provides guidance to inform the development
of flood emergency plans by outlining a series of principles and processes.
