President’s Update – 18 December 2025

On behalf of the Australian Local Government Association, I would like to again extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and the Waverley community following the deeply shocking attack in Bondi. We stand with you in grief and solidarity, and we unequivocally condemn all forms of violence and hatred. We thank first responders, council staff and community leaders for the support they have provided at a difficult time.

2025 – A Year in Review

As we approach the end of 2025, I want to thank every council, mayor, shire president, councillor and local government professional for your dedication to serving communities across Australia. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year as President of ALGA. It’s been a privilege to connect with councils across Australia and see firsthand the breadth of incredible work you do for your communities.

This year, ALGA has continued to champion the interests of local government, advocating for sustainable funding, shaping national policy, and driving change. If you have five minutes, you can watch our video of a year in review.

Looking Ahead

As we look to 2026, ALGA will continue to advocate for recognition, resources, and reform to enable councils to deliver for their communities.

Partnerships and shared learning remain central to our success. This is why ALGA is looking forward to building on this at our 2026 National General Assembly (NGA) on 23-25 June in Canberra. Next year we will hold the Regional Forum, and a new Urban Forum in parallel on Tuesday 23 June, so that councils can discuss in more depth the geographic and population pressures for their regions.

I encourage every council to submit a motion to the NGA to put your council’s ideas on the federal stage. NGA resolutions inform policies, advocacy, and guide ALGA’s priorities. Make your council’s voice count. The call for motions has been open since early November and closes on 27 February 2026.
