Packaging Covenant’s ‘strengths and flaws’ under the microscope

A Melbourne consultancy firm will lead a review of the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure 2011 and the Australian Packaging Covenant.

A consultation paper and online survey have been prepared to seek stakeholder feedback on:

• The
  strengths and limitations of the operation of the UPM NEPM and the Covenant;
• The
  appropriateness of the goals of the UPM NEPM and the Covenant and views on the
  achievement of these to date; and
• Opportunities
  to improve the UPM NEPM and the Covenant (or introduce an alternative
  arrangement) to achieve better outcomes for used packaging. 

The federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) has advised that consultation will be open until 5 March 2021.

Interested parties are invited to complete the online survey and/or upload a written submission in response to the consultation paper using DAWE’s Have Your Say consultation platform.

Registration with the Have Your Say platform is required to make a submission.

DAWE has
also announced a review of the Australian Heritage Strategy 2015-25, with
interested parties invited to provide feedback via an online survey.

The
strategy was implemented to better identify and manage heritage places to
ensure their long-term protection.

At the
midway point of the strategy’s allotted 10-year lifespan, DAWE wants views on:

• The
  strategy’s strengths and weaknesses;
• How
  it might be improved for the next five years;
• Whether
  it appropriately reflects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage;
• Whether
  it adequately reflects heritage’s key threats, developments and challenges; and
• How
  the strategy might reflect the involvement of communities in protecting and
  managing our heritage.

The survey
will remain open until 18 March 202.

An updated
draft strategy will then be released for further stakeholder comment before the
review is finalised.
