New fire and flood mapping tool prototypes set for July release

Prototypes
of two new satellite data tools to map burnt areas and flood extents are
expected to be available by July.

Developed
by Geoscience Australia’s Digital Earth Australia program, the tools will support
emergency management efforts across the country.

The
new tools are intended to complement Geoscience Australia’s existing national
bushfire monitoring tool, DEA Hotspots.

This
tool identifies areas of unusually high temperatures, detected from satellite
sensors in “near real time” every 10 minutes, providing valuable information
for emergency managers to identify potential fire locations with a possible
risk to communities and property.

Geoscience Australia is keen to obtain user feedback on how DEA Hotspots might be improved.
