ALGA welcomes the passage of EPBC Act reforms

Local governments welcome national laws which properly protect our environment and balance community needs.

“Local governments are on the frontline for environmental protection and support efforts to make national environmental laws more effective and streamlined” said the ALGA President, Mayor Matt Burnett.

“Taking a more streamlined through these laws can help accelerate decisions and provide certainty for the houses we desperately need across the nation “

Reforms to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act will enable regional and strategic planning, helping to deliver national priorities like housing and renewables. Local governments need to be at the table when the regional plans are being developed so their knowledge of community and environmental values is properly incorporated.

“While we support reforms that strengthen environmental outcomes and reduce duplication, councils must be part of the process. We know our what our communities need and reforms risk shifting costs to local government and undermining the very outcomes they seek.”

“Reforms of this magnitude must be accompanied by practical support. With appropriate funding and collaboration, councils can accelerate on‑the‑ground conservation, restore habitats and deliver positive outcomes in every community,” Mayor Matt Burnett said.

“Local government is looking forward to partnering with the Commonwealth on how local values, planning and expertise can be incorporated into the new system.”
