President’s Update – 1 September 2025
ALGA was in the spotlight during the recent Economic Reform Roundtable in Canberra after we highlighted how local governments can play a key role in supporting the Federal Government’s national productivity goals.
My opinion editorial about unlocking productivity generated articles in several national publications, including Government News, LG Focus and Council Magazine, and I did interviews on local radio and appeared on TV news.
As part of our advocacy, we once again urged the Government to restart the local government sustainability inquiry, which must consider a significant increase in untied, formula-based funding for all councils, including through federal Financial Assistance Grants.
Our call for untied formula-based funding also reduces red tape in grants administration, as many councils often miss out on funding because they can’t afford the research and resources to create impressive applications.

Multi-function poles guide
We have released a new Multi-Function Pole best practice guide, in partnership with Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM).
As a useful new resource for councils, the guide provides comprehensive information about the planning, procurement, installation, and management of multi-function poles – modern utility poles designed to support a variety of local services such as lighting, telecommunications, CCTV, public WiFi, and smart city infrastructure.
Developed with input from capital cities and stakeholders, it helps navigate technical, legal, and aesthetic considerations while promoting coordinated and efficient infrastructure deployment.

Finally, we’re excited to partner with the Greater City of Bendigo to host the 2025 National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Congress to be held in Bendigo, regional Victoria, from 11-12 November. The Council has provided valuable assistance already in our preparation.
The program is shaping up well with a strong focus on how local roads and infrastructure can form an essential part of boosting the nation’s productivity.
We also have a wide range of engaging speakers, including Associate Professor Ben Beck from Monash University, IPWEA Principal Adviser Steve Verity and Managing Director of Section51 grants consultancy Colin Steele who will discuss the important area of grants and funding.
