$5m boost for Tasmanian disaster resilience and risk reduction
Tasmanian local governments delivering natural disaster risk
reduction initiatives are eligible for a share of $5.22 million in new
Commonwealth grants funding.
The National Partnership funding will be distributed by the
Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Grants Program (NDRRGP) under a five-year
agreement to support the implementation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction
Framework.
Disaster risk reduction activities aligned to the Tasmanian Disaster Resilience Strategy 2020-2025 will also be eligible for support under the NDRRGP. Successful applicants will be required to match the funding with cash or in-kind contributions.
Organisations eligible to apply for funding under the NDRRGP
are:
- Local councils;
- State government agencies;
- Not-for-profit organisations with emergency
management responsibilities; and - Universities and other research institutions.

In related
news, the Sorrel and Glamorgan Spring Bay councils are to get $890,000 in
Federal and Tasmanian government funding to replaced flood-damaged
infrastructure.
The money,
which is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster
Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), follows a significant storm and flood
event in early April 2020.
Federal Minister
for Emergency Management David Littleproud described it as “a serious disaster
event which caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads and
bridges”.
