Submission to Economic Reform Roundtable

ALGA has made a submission to the Federal Government’s Economic Reform Roundtable, being led by Treasury.

The submission addresses the Government’s three priority areas of improving productivity, economic resilience and budget sustainability by highlighting the key role councils can play to support national reforms with local solutions.

To unlock the full potential of local government to support economic growth, infrastructure delivery and resilience, we have called for the following reforms and solutions:

  • Return ALGA to full membership of National Cabinet
  • Accelerate housing supply by appropriately funding enabling housing infrastructure
  • Fund climate adaptation to enhance community resilience
  • Invest in emergency management to minimise the impact on productivity from disasters
  • Maintain community infrastructure, and
  • Invest in safer roads.

The submission also highlighted local governments stand ready to be a full partner with the Government on economic reform, bringing practical, place-based solutions to support vibrant communities.
