Local governments are indispensable in helping Australian communities adapt to the impacts of climate change. ALGA recently conducted new research to paint the national picture of local government climate risk management and adaptation work. This webinar on 30 July 2025 will: Give you information about how other local governments approach the risks and opportunities that climate change pose to their communities. Enable discussion with other local government attendees about their approaches, wins and challenges in managing climate change impacts. Provide guidance on the tools, courses and learning opportunities available for local governments working on climate risk. ALGA welcomes you to a free, online discussion about the diverse and significant contributions that local governments are making to adaptation in Australia. The webinar will be broken into two sections, which you can join as relevant to you: 2-3 pm Session One: ALGA’s Adapting Together research report and open discussion on managing the impacts of a changing climate. 3-4 pm Session Two: Discussion on resources available to local governments to understand and manage climate risks by ALGA and the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

The 2025 National General Assembly of Local Government (NGA) – incorporating the Regional Cooperation and Development Forum – was held from 24 - 27 June 2025 in Canberra. The theme of the 2025 NGA was “National Priorities Need Local Solutions” and the annual event attracted a record number of 1300 Mayors, Shire Presidents and Councillors from across Australia.  There were many memorable moments across the four-day event, including the welcome address by Australia’s Governor General Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, who spoke about community resilience, local engagement and the need to nurture civic leadership in our young people. ALGA’s inaugural 2025 Local Government Tech Leadership Summit was held in Sydney on Wednesday 12 March. This not-to-be-missed event at the Sheraton Sydney Hyde Park Hotel highlighted local governments embracing technological change and included the launch of new research about cyber security. The summit will also featured a keynote presentation by futurist and Global Head of Digital Transformation at Norton Rose Fulbright Nick Abrahams, highlighting the changing tech landscape and opportunities for local government innovation. The 2024 National General Assembly of Local Government (NGA) – incorporating the Regional Cooperation and Development Forum – was held in Canberra 2-4 July 2024. The theme of the 2024 NGA was “Building Community Trust” which acknowledged the critical importance of trust in our democracy’s different level of government, its institutions, and amongst its citizens.
